Stem Cell Transplantation Programme

The aim of the Stem Cell Transplantation Programme is to offer patients suffering from the main onco-haematological diseases, and from certain selected types of solid tumour, transplantation of haematopoietic stem cells as a strategy of treatment.

Stem Cell Transplantation Programme

At the Candiolo Institute we perform transplants of autologous and allogeneic (donor) stem cells. In this type of transplant where a compatible family-member donor is unavailable, the donor is selected through the world donor registry  (WBMDR)

While in autologous transplantation the stem cells serve to reconstitute the haematopoietic system, in the transplantation of donor bone marrow (allogeneic), in addition, they also play a role in cellular immunotherapy of the tumour (Graft Versus tumor effect).

The Transplantation Centre has, over the years, striven in two particular directions:

  • Development of procedures designed to limit the development of the main transplant complications (on all acute and chronic GvHDs) achieving a significant containment of transplant-associated mortality.
  • Study of response onset post transplant due to the donor's immune system.

The multidisciplinary approach

Thanks to a team of experts from the various specialist areas involved, the patient enters  an integrated and highly-personalized system. This integrated approach is present at all  levels and each patient is offered the possibility to access additional support services (psycho-oncology service; social worker; local connections for ongoing care and assistance).

On their very first visit to the the Welcome and Service Centre (CAS), the patient's situation is reported to the dedicated nursing service and to the Interdisciplinary Care Group (GIC) for collegial discussion. According to the type of therapy indicated, at the specific point in the development of the patient's disease  and at the degree of intensity of care required, the patient will be followed in the Ordinary Medical Ward for Medical Oncology, the Oncological Day Hospital, the Oncology outpatient department for first visits, restaging and follow-up.
